  2. Reasons for Settling the Coastal Plain • England and Spain in the 1500’s: Competitive, Desire to settle North America • Queen Elizabeth I of England: Sir Walter Raleigh and John White

  3. Arrival on Roanoke Island • Rebuild first fort • Build new homes and repair old ones • Too late in the season to plant crops?

  4. Return to England • Governor White returns in 1587 for food and supplies. • He leaves his family and settlers behind, including Virginia Dare, his infant granddaughter.

  5. Arrival in England • England and Spain are at war • Ships ordered to stay for war • John White is stranded • Three years pass…………

  6. Return to Roanoke Island • Colony is deserted • Colonists are gone • “CRO” carved on tree • “CROATOAN” carved on wooden post

  7. Where Did the Colonists Go? • With a North American tribe, such as the Hatteras? • Settled and are ancestors of the Lumbee? • Murdered? A North Carolina Mystery…….
