Essential Questions • What is the process of ossification and its relationship to bone formation? • How do we know ossification occurs? • What is an example of ossification? • What is the process of bone formation?
What are the structures of the long bones? • What are the structures of the skeletal system?
Bone formation Bones consist of microscopic mature bone cells Bone marrow Oste/o/cytes Osteo = bone Cyte = cell
Ossification… • occurs when minerals replace previously formed cartilage and while long bones are growing in length • As bones ossify, they become hard • The ossification process begins from the center of a bone and moves to the ends of the bone • Infants bones are soft and pliable because of ‘incomplete ossification’
Example of Ossification The soft spot on a baby’s head called, the fontanel is a familiar example of where bone has not formed yet, although it will over time, as well as become hardened.
Types of Bones Long Flat Irregular Short (Cuboid)
Long bones • Found in the arms • and legs
Compact Spongy More surface area than compact allowing bone marrow development Calcium is less available and makes it weaker Less Ca makes it a prime target for fracture • Support and strength to entire body • Stores calcium for hardening bone
Flat bones • Bones of the skull • Ribs http://pikdit.com/i/visible-working-lung-through-exposed-ribcage-relatively-clean-but-definitely-nsfw/
Irregular bones • Spinal column
Wrist • (Rt or Lt ?) Short bones(cuboids) Ventral view (think anatomical position)
Axial Skeleton Skull Spinal column Ribs Sternum Hyoid
Hyoid Bone • What is unique about the hyoid bone?
