Common Group Practices • Safe, positive environment of recovery • Welcoming all addicts with a desire to stop using • Teaching principles to newcomers • Self Support • Good public relations • Encouraging diversity • Nurturing all members
An Atmosphere of Recovery • People feel safe to share • Respectful environment • Free from judgment • Free from cross talk and interruption • Conversations kept to a minimum • Others?
Predatory Behavior: Definitions Predatory: • relating to or denoting an animal or animals preying on others. • seeking to exploit or oppress others Behavior: • the way in which one acts or conducts oneself, especially toward others.
Predatory Behavior Definitions 2 • Predatory Behavior is a concept that refers to anyone preying on someone else • This behavior can be deliberate: the perpetrator is aware of what they’re doing and the harm they’re causing • It can also be unintentional: the perpetrator is unaware that their actions are threatening or causing discomfort to others
Sexual Predation Examples • Stalking for sex • Groping while hugging • 13th Stepping • Using language during sharing that belittles or insults people of different genders • Making unwanted personal advances • Soliciting prostitution
Predatory Behavior: Other Examples • Always taking, never giving • Borrowing money • Constantly bumming cigarettes • Using guilt trips to solicit rides, meals, and other favors • Selling something • Drugs • Products or services • Sponsor pushing religion on sponsees • Politicking
Large Group Discussion (20 minutes) • Share about a predatory situation that affected you personally in an NA meeting, event, or other recovery context. • How did it make you feel? • How did you react? • Did you address the situation long term? If so, how? • What other examples of predatory behavior have you witnessed in NA?
Small Group Discussion Intro • Choose a facilitator • Choose a recorder • Solicit ideas on the topic and the recorder will write them on flip chart • After brainstorming, pick two that you want to share with the larger group. • Choose a person to share with the large group
Small Group Discussion (30 minutes) • Each person describe a situation where your Group or service body has addressed predatory behavior, either in response to an individual instance, or a general concern. What did the Group or service body do? Recorder writes each story on the flip chart. • Take a few quiet moments and imagine what it would look like if everyone felt completely free of predatory behavior in NA meetings or events. What has changed? Recorder writes each story on the flip chart.
Large Group Discussion-Sharing • Share two stories on Question 1: How has your service body responded? • Share 2 stories on Question 2: We’ve eliminated predatory behavior in NA meetings. What has changed? • Any other story we have not heard?
Large Group Discussion: What Can We Do? • Raise awareness • Write and enforce policies establishing basic rules of etiquette • Call the police • Other ideas?
