The Exodus Chapter 7
Pharaohs command • Israelites are living in Goshen in Egypt • Pharaoh wants to deal harshly with the Israelites cuz there are too many of them • They were first enslaved by Pharaoh • Exodus 1:22 - He will kill all the male children but the let the girls live • Why not the Girls? • Because they would grow up and marry the Egyptians, thus surrendering all the good land into Egyptian hands 1
Moses’ Birth • Moses was hidden by his mother and set in the river to be found by Pharaoh’s daughter • She named him Moses • Moses means “Brought up out of the water” 2
Moses Grows up • Moses grows up in privilege • His own mother is his nurse and taught him the faith of his ancestors • He knows that he is a Hebrew boy 3
Moses’ Crime • Moses kills an Egyptian for beating a Hebrew slave • P.S. Not an accident! • Moses runs away to the land of Midian • Midianites are descendants of Abraham 4
Moses meets Zipporah • He meets her at a well • He defended Zipporah and her sisters from some shepherds and watered their flock • Zipporoah’s father Jethro invited him to live with them • He married Zipporah and gave birth to Gershom 5
The Burning Bush • God reveals himself as the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob • This narrows Him down to the God of those enslaved in Egypt • Ex 3:14 God calls himself “I AM” • Often in the NT Christ calls himself “I AM” and many become angry because they believe him to be blaspheming. 6
Message to Pharaoh • Exodus 5:1 “Thus says the Lord, Let my people go, that they may celebrate a feast to me in the desert” • They needed to go for 3 days to offer sacrifice • Important cultural note: • Egypt worshipped god’s that were depicted as animals • Israel had also fallen into idol worship 7
Message to Pharaoh • Why would they need to go 3 days? • Because the sacrifices they were going to do would have been offensive to the Egyptians • Israel was to be a royal/priestly nation, the ‘first-born’ son, and example to other nations 8
Pharaoh will not listen • Exodus 4:21 - “I will make him obstinate”/ “I will harden his heart” • This means that God will let pharaoh have his way. • Pharaoh refuses and makes their work harder
10 Plagues The Plagues and what they mean [See Handout]
Exodus 7:14-24 - 1st Plague • Water to Blood • Hapi - the god of the Nile • Symbolic death of Hapi
Ex 7:25-8:11- 2nd Plague • Plague of Frogs • Heket - the goddess of fertility • “they will swarm all over…” • This is a mockery of their goddess of fertility
Ex 8:12-15 - 3rd Plague • Plague of gnats or lice • This is strike at their vanity
Ex 8:16-28 - 4th Plague • Plague of flies/bugs • Khepra god of resurrection • Goshen did not suffer the plague (the Israelites lived there)
Ex 9:1-7 - 5th Plague • Plague on the cattle • They had many god’s that were represented by livestock (cows, goats, etc)
Ex 9:8-12 - 6th Plague • Boils • In Egypt, ashes were like holy water. They blessed themselves with it, but now, this ritural would cause pain and give them boils.
Ex 9:13-35 - 7th Plague • Plague of hail • The gods Nut, Shu, Tefnut are being mocked here • They are the gods who made the weather good for agriculture
Ex 10:1-20 - 8th Plague • Plague of locusts • Crop god that protected their crops • This god is obviously being mocked
Ex 10:21-28 - 9th Plague • Plague of Darkness • Amon-Re is the head god, the chief god • The god of the Sun • When the sun went down it meant that he had gone to the realm of the dead and in rising again he ‘conquered’ death. • This plague shows he had been conquered
Ex 11:1ff - 10th plague • Death of the first-born sons of children and cattle • Pharaoh was warned this would happen in Ex 4:23 • He didn’t listen!
10th plague is unique • The first plague to require Israel to do anything • 1st born sons are ransomed by the blood of the lamb • The 1st born son’s of each Israelite family are to be the priests of this “priestly nation” 10
Understanding Passover Exodus 12
Passover Instructions • 12:5- Unblemished male lamb • 12:7 - Apply the blood over door post • 12:8 - Eat lamb and unleavened bread • 12:9 - lamb must be roasted (not raw or boiled) • 12:10 -None may be left in the morning • 12:11 - Eat meal in traveling clothes 11
Passover Instructions • One of the most important instructions • 12:14 - all generations to come will celebrate • A perpetual institution • 12:17 - • 12:24 - you must observe this when you arrive in the land God shows you 12
Passover Lamb as a “Type” of Christ • Christ was an unblemished male whom we now call the Lamb of God • Jn 20:32-36 none of Christ’s bones were broken on the Cross • Blood of both lambs saves from death • The sacrifice of the Lamb brings the people out of slavery 13
What this means for us! • We also will participate in it forever • This Passover is to be celebrated still • How do we do this? • In the Eucharist • “This is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, happy are those who come…” 14
Escape from Egypt • Ex 12:31-36 - Pharaoh sends them away • “Leave my people at once…Go and worship the Lord as you said. Take your flocks and your herds too…” • They are being guided by a pillar of fire at night/cloud by day 15
Pharaoh pursues them • Pharaoh changed his mind about them leaving and gathered an army to go chase them down. • Israelites have set up camp near the Red sea 16
Israel Panics • Ex 14:11 • “Where there no burial places in Egypt….Leave us alone. Let us serve the Egyptians.” • God tells him to lift his staff and the sea will split • The Israelites pass through the Water 17
Egypt Defeated • The greatest empire is defeated by the Israelites with the help of God • It was God’s victory! 18
A Type of Baptism • Crossing the Red Sea was a type of Baptism • Why? Because through the water of the Red Sea God saved the people from death. 19
Almost a Nation • Exodus means “going out” • Though they are free they are not quite a nation yet. • No land • No government except what God tells them through Moses 20
