  2. Why is course selection so important? • MOST IMPORTANTLY… • It sets a path for “Life after KAL” • drives Master Timetable • determines what courses can & will be offered to students • changes to student initial choices • difficult… may be impossible… • after the time table has been set

Visual Art The studio art program at Kal provides students with fundamental abilities and understanding along with a wide variety of opportunities and experiences to perceive and respond; create and communicate using visual information. From Grade 8 through to senior levels, students learn art foundations including: using a range of different materials, processes and equipment; technical and creative skill development; knowledge of design principles; and developing their own visual voices. Every person is capable of becoming an accomplished image maker, and Kalamalka Secondary Art students have a reputation for excellence and high achievement!

English • All students must take English 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 • Teachers of English: Ms. Anderson, Mrs. Cuthbert, Mr. Krahn, Mr. Winston • Extra Courses Offered from the English Department: • Humanities 11. This is a year long course which combines English 11 and Social Studies 11. • Advanced Placement Literature and Composition 12. This is an upper level course for college-bound grads with a focus on reading and analyzing literature. • Film Appreciation 11/12. This is a class open to any 11 or 12 student without prerequisite. It is a focus on films of different genres (Sci-fi, Comedy, War, Thriller/Horror, Coming of Age, Apocalyptic, Film Noir/Mystery) with a look at the old and new of each. We will learn critical thinking and writing as we watch the movies offered.

LANGUAGES FRENCH 8 -(everyone takes it) No grade 9 language Beginner Spanish (grade 10) FRENCH 9-11 Spanish 11 (Grade 11 Spanish or grade 11 French is the basic language requirement for many universities) (French recognized for Canadian government jobs) French 12 (needed for general arts/humanities)
