Research Problem Pushback: A learner-centered classroom takes students outside of their comfort zone. Goal: Develop and test a model for improving student attitudes and motivation in a learner-centered classroom.
Research Question Will positive reinforcement and solicitation of student opinions improve student attitudes towards a learner-centered classroom? Secondary questions: What types of feedback do the students need? Where are the students in their metacognitive development? Context: Introductory biology 200-350 students per section >65 majors—mostly life sciences, but very diverse
My primary research methods include: Longitudinal studies over the course of the semester. I will collect these data: Student surveys-online, written-notecards, in class clicker polls (problematic on some levels) Instruments are yet to be determined. Which are most appropriate? • Group Instructional Feedback Technique (GIFT) — Angelo 1992 • Transtheoretical Model of Change — Modified by Tolman 2012 • Others?? I will analyze the data by: • Looking at distribution of responses to multiple choice, Likert, etc. Do these change over time? Are there trends? • Analyze frequencies of written responses—categorize, tabulate Types of groupings??-metacognitive scales, self efficacy Research Methods
Question: Will positive reinforcement and solicitation of student opinions improve student attitudes towards a learner-centered classroom? Alignment: • The taking of polls to solicit student opinions serves as both a data collection mechanism and a means of increasing student participation. • If student attitudes change, then I would expect to see shifts in the distribution of responses. The data will help me answer my question by: • Providing series of data collections over time. • These snapshots will provide metrics to evaluate student attitudes and motivation while monitoring for possible changes.
