  1. Research Problem In one sentence, describe the problem that is the focus of your classroom research project about student learning: My students seem to come into class as literal thinkers, expecting problems to be relatively simple and straight forward, so have limited ability to handle complexity and multiple possible solutions to problems.

  2. Assessment data

  3. Research Question • What is your research question? • How do my students approach complex problem solving and does the approach change overthe semester? • What is the context (e.g. class setting, student audience) in which you will conduct your research? • Upper level microbiology with pre-nursing, pre-dietetics, and science majors at sophomore to post baccalaureate levels with 14-42 students

  4. Research Methods My primary research methods include: One group pre-test/post-test design I will collect these data: Pre- and post-survey on problem solving ability – CLASS-Bio Homework problem responses – problem solving skill assessment rubric (to be designed) Volunteer recordings of problem solving process I will analyze the data by: Compare pre- and post-survey responses Compare one early and one late homework assignment score Code interviews

  5. Timeline Whole class CLASS-Bio survey CLASS-Bio survey HW training HW 2 HW 12 Start End Audio recordings of problem solving efforts Scheduled early/late in semester Volunteers

  6. Alignment of Research Question and Methods This is why I think it aligns: Triangulation • Survey – self-report of problem solving skills at beginning and end of semester • HW responses – assessed problem solving • Recording – process of problem solving by individual students The data will help me answer my question by: Surveys – student-identified strengths/weaknesses HW responses – rubric-identified strengths/weaknesses Recordings – real-time process of problem solving
