  1. Research Problem • I ask my students to solve problems and communicate the “solutions” to me in an oral test. • Many students do not do well at this exercise. • Example problem (Distinguishing antigenic shift and drift) • Must know the two processes • cDNA synthesis • Southern, Northern and Western blotting

  2. Research Question • Research Question: • Can I identify where students get “hung up”? • Research Context: • Microbiology for majors • 48 students per semester (2 labs) • I teach both lecture and lab • My question is interesting because: • I do not know …… • if they fail to comprehend the knowledge • if they cannot synthesize the pieces • if they cannot communicate their understanding • if they get discouraged by the process • who actually solves the problem within the class

  3. Research Methodology • Pre and post content, problem-solving, behaviors and attitudes • Reflections about where they are getting “hung up” • Have students identify how the came to understand the problem

  4. Alignment of Research Question and Methodology • if they fail to comprehend the knowledge (pre and post, journal) • if they cannot synthesize the pieces (pre and post, journal) • if they cannot communicate their understanding (commination exercise before starting the exercise vs oral test) • if they get discouraged by the process (attitudinal) • who actually solves the problem within the class (journal)
