Research Problem • I don’t know if my assignment for students to create a model of a differentiated eukaryotic cells meets my learning objectives. • Learning objectives: Students should be able to explain how the structure of a cell relates to its function, how individual organelles contribute to cell function, and that cells have various shapes, sizes, and functions.
Research Question • Does building a 3D model of a differentiated cell increase student ability to relate cell structure and organelles to function and recognize cellular diversity? • Cell Biology course, Bio Sciand Chem E majors, required course, typically sophomores, very little ethnic diversity • My question is interesting because: This assignment allows students to be creative, accommodates different learning styles, and can be adapted easily to other courses. Student models can also reveal misconceptions.
Research Methodology Compare an assignment where students look at 2D images online with the model assignment. In both cases students will write a description of how cell structure relates to function and provide references. Qualitative assessment by coding or rubric. Pre and post test. End of semester survey.
Alignment of Research Question and Methodology The pre and post test questions and directions for written assignment need to be carefully aligned with the learning outcomes I want to test. The survey will determine attitudes.
