WHY? • Increasing Opportunities for Health and Medical Careers • PSAT Data (57/228 students selected Health Careers as their field of study in college) • PreMed, Nursing, Dental Hygiene, PreVet, Sports Medicine/Physical Therapy, Animal Studies, etc. • Division Goal: • Prepare students for success in a Global Community • Establish Centers of Excellence • As part of Governor McDonnell’s “Opportunity to Learn” agenda, he includes a funding initiative that will provide first year start-up funding for Health Sciences academies.
Mission Statement • The Monticello High School Health and Medical Sciences Academy’s mission is to empower students to utilize 21st century skills while exploring health science career opportunities. The program will provide students a foundation for post-secondary education or workforce readiness in certified health related professions. Students will explore core content with technology through integrated projects, case studies, and focused learning experiences.
Goals • Students will be exposed to and explore health-related career opportunities. • Students will build a strong foundation and understanding of Anatomy and Physiology. • Students engage in a collaborative learning environment with students who share similar career interests. • The Academy utilizes community partnerships to design curriculum that support skills needed for student success in health related careers.
Year One Topics of Study • Cells and Cell Functions • Heart and Heart Health • Body Systems • Nutrition and Metabolism • DNA and Genetics • Molecular Biology and Disease • Epidemiology and Public Health • Plants and Medicine • Environment and Health • Modern Medical Interventions • Writing Grants and Research • Biology, Principles of Biomedicine, Health I • Research Option
Four Year Plan • Exposure • Integrated Biology and Foundations of Health and Medical Science Course • Exploration • Introductory Human Anatomy and Physiology Course • Preparation and Practice • Clinical Rotations followed by senior year internship • Research with culminating senior project • Elective Course Offerings (Medical Terminology, College Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology, Forensics, Anatomical Architecture, etc.) • General Education Requirements
Who? • Students interested in • working with professional mentors that will be able to support you in addition to the faculty and staff, • and facilitating a smooth transition to a four year college, two year community college, and/or work, • preparing themselves for competitive career pathways, • earning certifications in CPR, First Aid, and EMT (18 y.o.), • cohort support while in High School with students interested in similar career aspirations, • integrated work, • developing Leadership Skills, • entering college as a sophomore.
Selection Process • Selection Committee Consisting of Monticello Faculty, Members of the Advisory Board, and County Employees • Considering information from • Transcripts, • Work ethic, • Recommendation Letters, • Activities/Awards, and • Essays.
Deadlines • Applications are due January 18. • Admissions timeline is posted on the webpage. • Student letters will be sent the week of March 1st. Notification of acceptance will be sent both electronically and in writing.
