  2. American Response to War Right away, American government rallied for support of the war Propaganda often used against Germany to get support from people (Posters, parades, pamphlets, etc.) Had to “sell” why we are entering to public This is what Wilson was worried about, but had to do it
  3. Don’t Be Anti-American!! Espionage Act: punished for spying or refusing the draft Sedition Act: illegal to speak out against government (Freedom of Speech?)(Some were even jailed)
  4. America Needs Soldiers 750,000 volunteers to start; not enough Selective Service Act: Men between 21-30 had to register to be drafted by military; no choice Many Americans fought this as violation of civil liberties Quakers
  5. African-Americans At first, limited to noncombat roles NAACP fought this Then mainly fought in SEGREGATED units led by white commanders (Just like at home in South; Jim Crow Laws) Mainly fought with French regiments rather than white American regiments; French later rewarded these soldiers with medals for bravery
  6. Women in War NOT allowed to be soldiers, but did everything else to help war effort Ambulance drivers, nurses in Red Cross, telephone operators, typists, filled in industrial jobs while men were fighting to keep economy going
  7. America Needs $$$$ Raised taxes of course (personal and business) Liberty Bonds: war bonds used to give loans to American Allies allowing them to buy food and supplies Limited food sales so would not run out for troops Herbert Hoover ran this process; also gave incentives to farmers to grow more “Meatless Mondays,” “Wheatless Wednesdays,” and plant “Victory Gardens” at home http://www.meatlessmonday.com/
  8. Positive Effect of War Allies need for American goods produced more jobs as immigration declined Workers were valuable; so could demand better pay and hours; strikes worked Union loved it!!

  10. We Arrived Just in Time! Allied forces were in bad shape Germany was advancing more into France; Russia barely was able to hold Germans back
  11. Russia Leaves! Bolshevik Revolution: Communism was new government in Russia, which led to Civil Wars and famine at home Communism: people who seek equal distribution of wealth and end all forms of private property Led by Vladimir Lenin

Germany Turns Up Heat With Russia gone, really started to advance hard to Paris Many Americans suffered at first since not well-trained yet Germans however, advanced faster than their supplies and had to retreat 35 miles away from Paris! Germany tries again against British forces, but were stopped
  13. America Regroups Germans tried several more times to get to Paris, but America held strong America actually started to advance toward Belgium to take major German supply routes
  14. Armistice (Truce) At home, Germany faced food riots and strikes from angry citizens German soldiers started deserting or got captured Austria-Hungary signed peace agreement, later followed by Germany Germany forced to leave, along with giving up some land they acquired in area 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month = ARMISTICE
