  1. Periodismo Bilingüe Eduardo Souss News Anchor/Editor WOSO-AM

  3. Journalism in English • There is no true cultural difference between journalism in English and Spanish • Know your audience: the difference between El Nuevo Día and Primera Hora • Direct translation does not work • Read the entire story and think about it in English before writing

  4. Examples of Mistakes • “plain daylight” instead of “broad daylight” • “total number of legislation” instead of “total number of legislative proposals” • “we count with first class speakers” instead of “we have a first class lineup of speakers” • “ample women’s movement”

  5. Important Terms • Presidente de la Cámara – Speaker of the House • Presidente de la Comisión – Committee Chairman • Portavoz de la Mayoría/Minoría – Majority/Minority Leader • Secretario de la Gobernación – Chief of Staff • Fiscalización – Oversight • Escrutinio -- Canvassing

  6. Recommendations • Read a lot (newspapers, magazines, books) • Look up words you don’t recognize even if you can infer the definition from the context • For grammar: “The Elements of Style” by William Strunk, Jr. and E.B. White 4th Edition • Listen to WOSO 1030 AM
