  3. More than 140 volunteers • 35 countries represented • Perform yearly training • More than 7000 hours of training/equipment maintenance • A mix of Telecom, IS/IT, logistics, communications and project managers

  7. Mission briefing To prepare and deploy a new WIDER v3 installation, along with a GATR in the remote village of Bor. To assist users with registering on the WIDER network and gaining internet access. To train local staff in confirming user registration (focus on NGOs) To provide training to local UN IT staff to ensure local competence in maintaining existing deployments. To assist in any way possible! - loading food onto a helicopter

  8. THE FIELD - BOR Generally smooth installation Had to “MacGyver” some RF cables Good range from the APs - Root AP has recently gone faulty Immediate demand from NGOs! Some issues getting access to users who had previously registered

  9. TRAINING - JUBA Focus on training a new UN ICT officer – Marta Also trained local Wimax expert “George” Murphy’s law is true AC had issues with assigning IP address to a MAC Much troubleshooting, but still provided reasonable hands on training

  10. SOUTH SUDAN • Very special country. Only two years old. No coins. No tourists. No postcards • One of the poorest countries in the world. Hunger. Malaria, typhoid, aids • Civil war between ethnics, war with North Sudan. Mines all over the country • Country of many contrasts • Let me tell you some stories… 

Typhoon Haiyan • Disaster hit on 8th November 2013 • Most powerful typhoon to ever hit landfall • At least 6200 have been confirmed killed, with many thousands more still missing • Destruction on a scale never seen before • The disaster response by the UN was the most technologically assisted ever • 2 main cities, Tacloban and Guiuan

My mission • Original mission was for IT support • It didn’t turn out that way…. • Ensure the satellite/internet connection remained alive / stable • Extend and maintain the wifi network (WIDER) • Help in any way possible • Installing solar panels • Fixing generators • Moving equipment • General IT help • Electrics

  14. My MIssion • An incredible experience, very difficult and very rewarding • In particular, going around town on Christmas day • My final task was to do a handover to the next group of Ericsson Response people replacing me • The work continues in the field
