MISSOURI COMPROMISE • 1. Missouri enters as a slave state • 2. Maine enters as a free state • 3. NO SLAVERY north of the 36’ 30” Line of latitude (Southern border of Missouri) THIS IS A TEMPORARY SOLUTION. THE BAD FEELINGS BETWEEN SLAVE AND FREE STATES IS GROWING EVERY YEAR!!!

FLORIDA • Spain owned Florida; DIDN’T SETTLE THERE • Runaway slaves and Indians used Florida as a base to attack the US • Pres. Monroe sends Andrew Jackson to the Florida border to stop them • Jackson illegally crosses into Florida and kills Spanish, English, and Indians. • Monroe could have punished JACKSON for not following orders • Instead, he THREATENS to unleash JACKSON again as a scare tactic to convince Spain to sell Florida to the US • 1819 ADAMS ONIS TREATY: The US buys Florida
The Monroe Doctrine • Issued under President Monroe (really the work of Sec. of State John Quincy Adams) • Declared to the world that they are to stay out of North and South America • No one took it seriously because America was weak, • However, the MONROE DOCTRINE shows the US’s desire to keep Europeans out of “our” hemisphere
