SWE 513 COMPUTER-BASED SYSTEM ENGINEERING
SYSTEM • A system is a purpuseful collection of interrelated componenets that work together to achieve some objective. • The overall weight of the system • The reliability of the system • The usability of the system
EMERGENT SYSTEM PROPERTIES • Functional properties • Non-functional emergent properties • Hardware reliability • Software reliability • Operator reliability
SYSTEMS AND THEIR ENVIRONMENT • Process changes • Job changes • Organisational changes
THE SYSTEM ENGINEERING PROCESS • Interdisciplinary involvement • Reduced scope for rework during system development • System requirements definition • Abstract functional requirements • System properties • Characteristics which the system must not exhibit
THE SYSTEM ENGINEERING PROCESS • System design • Partition requirements • Identify subsystems • Assign requirements to sub-systems • Specify sub-system functionality • Define sub-system interfaces • Sub-system development • System integration • System installation • System operation • System evolution
SYSTEM PROCUREMENT • To buy or let a contractor to design and build a system • Cheaper to buy than to design • Large systems have a mixture of off-the-shelf components and designed components
SUMMARY • System engineering is a complex and difficult process which requires input from a range of engineering disciplines. • The emergent properties of a system are properties that are characteristic of the system as a whole rather than of its component parts: • Performance, reliability, usability, safety and security. • System architectures are usually described using block diagrams showing the major subsystems and their relationships • The system engineering process includes specification, design, development, integration and testing. • The system procurement process involves specifying the system, issuing a request for propsals, choosing a supplier and then letting a contract for the system.
