  3. How to connect? • Through the IUB Libraries Web Page: http://www.indiana.edu/~libfind • Direct: http://www.webofscience.com http://webofscience.com HOWEVER: • You must be connected to an IU computer in both cases.

  4. Source Journal Coverage • SCIE: 5700 titles • SSCI: 1735 titles* • A&HCI: 1145 titles* *also includes selected articles from SCIE • Weekly updates • Lag time: 2-3 weeks http://www.isinet.com/journals/journals.html

  5. 17 Document Types in All Files • Article • Biographical Item • Correction, Addition • Editorial Material • Letter • News Item • Also 13 special types for A&HCI only

  6. Reviews • Book Review • Database Review • Hardware Review • Review • Software Review • A&HCI: art exhibit, dance performance, film, music performance or score, etc.

  7. Options: Easy Search • Up to 100 records retrieved • Topic (subject search) • Person • Works by the person • Works cited by others • Works about the person Hint: Use only the family name for information about someone and do as a topic search, BUT...

  8. Search Example 1: Use of Full Search for Biographical Item • Find biographical works on Linus Pauling • Comparison of “Easy Search” and the “General Search” option • Recommended: Search Last Name only and elect to retrieve only Biographical Items in General Search.

  9. Option: Place Searches (Easy or Full General Search) • Institution • College or University • Research Institution • Company • Geographic Data • Country • City • Postal Code

  10. Search Example 2: Use of Full Search with Address Data • Find all 1998 WOS source publications by IUB Chemistry Department personnel and arrange by source title (journal). • Use the Full General Search option. • Enter address data with the “same” proximity operator: Indiana same Chem same 47405 • Hint: Check the abbreviations list.

  11. Boolean and Proximity Operators; Truncation • AND, OR, NOT • Phrases imply adjacency when no operator is used. • SAME or SENT • Terms in the same “sentence” in any order • Precedence: ( ) > SAME or SENT > NOT > AND > OR • Truncation symbol (wild card): *

  12. Search Example 3: Use of Truncation and Proximity • Full General Search for a Topic: • Mouse Pheromones • Strategy: (mouse or mice or mus musculus) same (pheromone* or sex attractant*)

  13. Subject (Topic) Searches: What’s being searched? • Title words in all years • Authors’ Keywords, Keywords Plus, and Words from the Author Abstracts from 1991- • Keywords Plus: words or phrases that frequently appear in the titles of an article's references, but do not appear in the title of the article itself

  14. Related Records • Articles that cite one or more of the same papers cited by the fully displayed record, sorted by relevance (i.e., by the number of shared references) • Taken from all databases and all years, not just those selected

  15. Search Example 4: Need to Use Synonyms in Topic Searches • No controlled subject vocabulary in WOS • XPS (ESCA) • Since both refer to the same technique, use both in an OR search

  16. Cited Reference Searching • Every reference in the bibliography of each item published in the source journals becomes a potential search key. • Caution: References may be incorrect or incomplete. • Even second-listed and later authors can be searched IF you are content to consider just ISI source journals.

  17. Search Example 5: Cited Reference Searching • Use the Full General Search and Cited Reference Search Option • Find publications that have cited the works of David E. Clemmer. • Dots before his name indicates he is not the first listed author on the publication. • Links are to ISI source journals; unlinked items may be incorrect forms of the ref.

  18. Search Hints: Spaces, apostrophes included 1998- • For an article authored by C. D. O'Brian O'BRIAN C* OR OBRIAN C* • For an article on Paget's disease PAGET'S DISEASE OR PAGETS DISEASE • For an article authored by W. de la Rosa DE LA ROSA W* OR DELAROSA W*

  19. Printing, Downloading Results • Mark records that you want to print or download (or MARK ALL), then SUBMIT them to MARKED LIST • Marked records are automatically submitted when you change pages

  20. Customizing the Answer Set • Basic output: Authors, titles, sources • Optional: • cited references, addresses, abstract, language, publisher information, ISSN document type, keywords, times cited • Sort by: • Latest date, First author, Source title, Times cited
