Preventing and Overcoming Abuse • Objective 1:Describe the different types of abuse and way to protect yourself from abuse. • Objective 2: Identify rape in relationships, how alcohol and drugs play roles in rape, and how to avoid date rape • Objective 3:Describe ways to overcome abuse for survivors and help for the abusers.
Types of Abuse • Question: What things would make a relationship abusive? • Tries to pressure the other person into sexual activity • Tries to make the relationship exclusive right away • Acts jealous or possessive • Tries to control the other persons behavior • Yells, swears, or emotionally attacks the other person • Threatens the other with physical violence • 1) Physical Abuse • Is a pattern of intentional intentionally causing bodily harm or injury to another person. • Ex: Hitting, kicking, shoving, biting, pulling hair, and throwing objects at another person. • Or inflicting injury using weapons or belts • Abuse is not the victims fault • Video Clip: http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/showbiz/2010/08/13/am.costello.domestic.violence.cnn?iref=videosearch
Types of Abuse continued… • 2) Emotional Abuse • Verbal Abuse-Using words to mistreat or injure another person. • Ex: Name-calling, hurling insults, and yelling in a threatening way. • Can harm a persons mental/emotional health by making the person feel stupid, worthless or helpless. • Stalking-The repeated following, harassment, or threatening of an individual to frighten or cause him or her harm. • Ex: Following a person, standing outside their home, repeated phone calls. • Victims may often feel anxious, nervous, and unsafe. • Fact: Each year as many as 200,000 people are victims of stalking.
Protecting yourself from Abuse • Hangout with others who share your same values and treat you with respect • Know your limits with regards to sexual activity and communicate them clearly to people you date • Avoid drugs and alcohol. • Know warning signs of abuse in relationships. • Seek help from someone you trust. • You are not to blame for someone else’s behavior, you can only control you own actions
Date and Acquaintance Rape • Date Rape- • Occurs when one person in a dating relationship forces the other person to take part in sexual intercourse. • More than 40% of female rape victims and more than 10% of male victims are romantically involved in some way with their attacker. • Acquaintance Rape- • The attacker is someone the victims knows casually or considered a friend. • This form of rape affects male victims most often. • All forms of rape may be traumatizing or leave lasting emotional scars. • http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=2143964n&tag=mncol;lst;2
Alcohol, Drugs, and Date Rape • Alcohol often plays a role in date rape. • Both males and females are more likely to be sexually attacked. • Date-Rape Drugs can include… GHB or Rohypnol “roofies” • What is Rohypnol? • A strong depressant drug that is sometimes used in treating insomnia (the inability to sleep). • Can be placed in food or drinks without a person knowing • Can cause the person to become drowsy, dizzy and lose consciousness. • http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/us/2013/02/20/dnt-co-campus-safety-rape-tips.krdo
Avoiding Date Rape • Avoid being alone with a dating partner if you don’t trust or know well. • Avoid alcohol and drugs. Be aware of what’s going on around you • Be clear about your sexual limits with your dating partner • Always get your own beverage at parties and never leave it unattended. • Make sure you have a way to get home, don’t depend only on your date. • If you start to feel dizzy, disoriented, or unwell, tell someone you trust and ask for help getting home.
Overcoming abuse • Victims of abuse or rape may be reluctant to tell others about what happened to them. • All forms of abuse/rape are illegal. Reporting the incident to authorities can help prevent future abuse. • QUESTION: Why is it beneficial for abusers, as well as survivors of abuse to seek counseling? • Help for survivors (pg. 240): • Help for abusers (pg. 241)
