  1. Fate or free will? In-class debate. . .get excited!!!

  2. What is fate/ free will • Fate is the belief that everything happens for a reason and that destiny is something that a person can’t avoid • Free will is the idea that there is not fate, and that life only plays out based on your decisions. • Which do you believe personally?

  3. What does this have to deal with Romeo and Juliet? • Today in class, we will be having a debate about whether the tragic events in Romeo and Juliet were due to fate or free will • You will be assigned one of three roles: • arguing for fate • arguing for free will • judge • Once you are placed in your groups, you will be working with your group to support why your side is the correct side

  4. How will this debate be set up? • Each team will be given an opportunity to present their opening arguments (30 seconds minimum) • Later, each team gets a chance to challenge the other team’s opinion (1 min minimum) • Lastly, each team gets an opportunity to submit their closing arguments (30 seconds minimum) • There will be a two minute break between each speech so that teams may adjust their arguments

  5. This is what it looks like. . . • Opening Argument: 30 sec. • Break: 1-2 min. • Opening Argument: 30 sec. • Break: 1-2 min. • Rebuttal: 1 min. • Break: 1-2 min. • Rebuttal: 1 min. • Break: 1-2 min. • Closing Statement: 30 sec. • Break: 1-2 min. • Closing Statement: 30 sec.

What does a Good debate look like? • Good research/ evidence/ proof • RESPECTFUL to one another. . .NO TRASH TALKING • Paying attention to what the other team argues in order to dispute what they say • Picking people to represent each team that are confident and know the material • HAS TO BE A DIFFERENT SPEAKER EACH TIME

  7. Who Wins? • The three judges are responsible for determining who will win • They must justify what their decisions are • Winners receive official bragging rights!!!
