  2. The City States of Sumer • Consisted of the central city and the surrounding countryside. • Military strength determined the size of the city-state.

  3. Gilgamesh • King of the City-State of Uruk • Subject of the Epic of Gilgamesh, the first recorded literature. • In the story… • Gilgamesh goes on an epic adventure. • Meets the “Noah” character from the flood.

  4. Sargon the Great • First emperor to rule over and empire • Similar story to Moses • Empire- land with different territories under a single rule. • His soldiers defeated all of the city states of Sumer! • Ruled for 50 years

  5. Polytheism • The worship of many gods. (Small “G”) • Enlil, lord of the air, Enki, god of wisdom • Inanna, goddess of love and war. • Success in life depends on pleasing the gods. • Priests- • performed religious ceremonies • Interpreted the wishes of the gods • Made offerings to the gods
