PS2 drift spaces Gijs de Rijk discussed with H. Bartosik, E. Mahner, Y. Papaphilippou 24th November 2009
Drift spaces : status • Shortest drift spaces are the ones between the main dipoles • Space between magnetic lengths of dipoles in MADX: 700 mm • Dipole length = Lmag + 1.0 or 1.5 Gap height • Dipole coil end 200 mm: might go down but cannot yet be guaranteed ( remaining drift space: 300 mm) only a detailed design can tell: too early now • Dipole pre-design touches limits already, if the steel which is procured is not as good as the one in the model ( few % saturation extra) we will need the 3 % extra length. To determine this we need a prototype: too early now • Vacuum has a design for a 350 mm pumping port with RF fingers included: including space for bolting ~400 mm are needed
Drift spaces: actions • Optics: if we go from 3 dipole blocks to 2 dipole blocks we get more space available: also the beta beating problem might need such a solution • The opticians will have a (quick) look at such a solution • Magnet people will have a look at a 5.6 m long dipoles • Magnets: within a year, during the detailed design, we will get a definitive statement on the coil end length • Vacuum: will have a look how to get a shorter pumping port: • Question: are RF fingers needed ? • What is the impedance budget of PS2? • Vacuum group does not propose new optics studies
