  2. Timeline 1 • Date: 1st Century AD • Romans built aqueducts, which are bridges that transports water.

  3. Timeline 2 • Date: AD 105 • The Romans built the Trajan bridge, which spans across the Tagus in Spain.

  4. Timeline 3 • Date: AD 134 • Sant’Angelo bridge is built by the Romans.

  5. Timeline 4 • Date: 595 to 605 AD • The oldest surviving stone bridge is built in China.

  6. Timeline 5 • Date: 1176-1209 • The London bridge is built.

  7. Timeline 6 • Date: 1345 • Ponte Vecchio is built. It later becomes the most widely known surviving Medieval bridge with houses.

  8. Timeline 7 • Date: The 16th Century • The Ile de la Cité is connected to the bank of the Seine with one bridge on one side and two on the other.

  9. Timeline 8 • Date: 1779 • The world’s first iron bridge is built. It had a span of 100 feet.

  10. Timeline 9 • Date: 1998 • The Akashi-Kaikyo bridge is built. It is also called the Pearl Bridge and it becomes the longest suspension bridge in the world.

  11. Timeline 10 • Date: 25 May 2008 • The Sutong Bridge is built. Out of all the cable-stayed bridges, it has the longest main span the world.

  17. The Golden Gate Bridge • Name: The Golden Gate Bridge • Description: A suspension bridge that connects San Francisco to Marin county. Construction began on May 27th 1937

  18. The Sutong Bridge • Name: The Sutong Bridge • Description: Out of all the cable-stayed bridges, it has the longest main span the world.

The Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge Name: Akashi Kaikyo Description: The Akashi Kaikyo is the longest suspension bridge in the world. “It took two million workers ten years to construct the bridge, 181 000 tonnes of steel and 1.4million cubic metres of concrete. The steel cable used would circle the world seven times.” (Ryan, V. 2004)

The Brooklyn Bridge • Name: Brooklyn Bridge • Description: The Brooklyn Bridge was built in 1867 and was completed in 1883. “Each cable is composed of 5,296 galvanized steel wires (the total length of wire used is 14,357 miles). Each of the four cables is capable of sustaining a live load of 12,000 tons.” (Moody, James)

The Sydney Harbor Bridge • Name: Sydney Harbor Bridge • Description: The Sydney Harbor Bridge is considered as one of the most important landmarks in Australia. “It was build in 1932 containing 6 millions of hand driven rivets. It has huge hinges due to the hot Sydney sun. The painted surface is equal to 6 football fields.” (Journey etc)
