  2. Charlemagne’s Heirs • 814 Charlemagne died • crowned son, Louis the Pious, as Emperor • Louis had three sons Lothair, Charles the Bald, and Louis the German

  3. Heirs cont. • Louis’s three sons fought one another for the empire • 843 Treaty of Verdun ended war • Carolingian kings lost power as a result of the treaty

  4. Invasions • destroyed empire between 800 and 1000 • Muslims - Rome & Italy • Magyars - the east • Vikings – the north

  5. THE VIKINGS • sailed from Scandinavia • Germanic people, also called Norsemen or Northmen • worshipped war-like gods • prided names like Eric Bloodaxe & Thorfinn Skullsplitter

  6. VIKINGS RAIDS • swiftly raided land • heavy armor • used warships in their raids • looted villages and monasteries
