  2. STEMNET creates opportunities to inspire young people in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)

  3. Where does STEMNET fit? Organisation dedicated to promoting STEM subjects and careers to all young people across the UK; Funded by BIS, with additional programme funding from DCSF. Key part of HMG’s STEM support infrastructure; Key focus on helping education, STEM employers and STEM people work together to challenge stereotypes, increase understanding, raise aspirations and help all young people achieve their potential.

  4. What can we do? Explain to young people the benefits that a better understanding of STEM can offer them as individuals; Be much clearer to young people of the value that potential employers place on STEM skills ; Ensure that schools and colleges, and other learning environments, are making use of the wide range of STEM support available to them; Encourage those working with young people to challenge stereotypes about those who work in STEM based roles, and to understand the enormous potential of STEM skills for all.

  5. STEMNET helps young people and their teachers access a range of STEM Enhancement & Enrichment (E&E) opportunities

The STEM Directories are a good place to start • Three Directories of STEM schemes – Science, Maths and Engineering & Technology; • Printed versions now available – primarily aimed at schools and colleges but relevant to all learning environments; • On-line from May 2009; www.stemdirectories.org.uk

  7. STEMNET helps more than 2,300 STEM employers to create effective links with education

  8. More than 28,500 STEM Ambassadors volunteer as inspiring role models for young people

STEM Ambassadors can really help challenge young people’s perceptions • UK-wide programme, funded by BIS, endorsed by National Council for Educational Excellence; • Over 28,500 volunteers from all walks of STEM (target 27,000) • Over 2,300 employers involved, ranging from large and SME’s; • More than 60% of Ambassadors are under 35; 43% are female; over 10% report their ethnic origin as BME; • Free of charge to young people, schools and colleges – and other appropriate learning environments. • Real people, in real jobs inspiring a new generation in STEM, through career talks, supporting workshops, mentoring and so forth

  11. The STEM Clubs Network allows young people to explore STEM in a stimulating learning environment
