WHAT IS THE FAFSA? Free Application for Federal Student Aid Designed by the U.S. Department of Education to help evaluate a family’s ability to pay for college Calculates the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) based on prior year Reapply each year Income and assets may change Family situation may be different from year to year
WHAT IS THE FAFSA? (cont.) Determines eligibility for financial aid Federal aid State aid College aid Scholarship programs Uses last tax year or calendar year to provide “snapshot” of family’s finances
Driver’s license (student) Social Security numbers (student and parent if applicable) W-2 forms and other records of earnings Prior year’s federal income tax returns Records of untaxed income Current bank statements Business and farm records Records of stocks, bonds and other investments BEFORE YOU BEGIN
Start by filling out the FAFSA on the Web worksheet Complete electronically “Save and complete later” feature Utilizes skip logic to go faster and make fewer errors Submit using electronic signature (PIN) Student needs a unique PIN Parent needs a unique PIN (for dependent students only) Get your pin at www.pin.ed.gov FILING YOUR FAFSA

What Happens Next? • Students and the listed colleges receive Student Aid Report (SAR) • Students and families review SAR for accuracy • Colleges match admission records with financial aid applications to determine eligibility • Colleges mail notices of financial aid eligibility to admitted students
Final Tips • Gather necessary documents ahead of time • Complete the FAFSA on the Web Worksheet • Check the worksheet for accuracy • Complete online FAFSA • Save your work often as you go • Print a copy of the FAFSA for your records
