  2. These studies may involve looking at genes and molecules in the lab, investigating plants and animals in rainforest, or the way that food chains work in the oceans. What do biologists do? Biologists study how living things work, how they interact with one another and their environment, and how they evolve.

  3. Biologists increase our understanding about the natural world in which we live – in so doing they address issues of global concern, such as environmental degradation and global climate change, human health, maintaining viable and abundant food supplies and conservation of endangered species.

  4. What does ‘biology’ cover?? • Zoology (the study of animals), botany (plants), genetics, environmental science, ecology, developmental biology, biotechnology, marine biology (not human biology, microbiology, anatomy, medicine, pharmacy etc)

  5. How does it all work?? BSc (3 years) All classes, small research projects Good grades? Want to do research? BSc Hons Some classes, big research project (MSc, similar to Hons but project bigger) Good Hons/MSc marks? Want to do research? PhD All research, some teaching Want to be a lecturer? Do full time research? Post-doc All research

What sort of jobs? 45% entered employment with their BSc More than half entered biology related positions (most commonly, conservation work, regulatory work and consultancy) 31% went on to further study 90% of those continued studying in a biological field Graduates with higher degrees (Hons and PhD) predominantly gained jobs in biology (mainly conservation, consultancy, biotech and regulatory)

  19. What do I do with a biology degree?? Maybe not biology … but hopefully … Academia, consultancy, government, scientific writing, fisheries management, conservation work, advocacy …. etc etc See the world …
