2. Jackknife Estimate When quad sampling is used to sample a community, it is possible to use a nonparametric approach to estimate species richness.
Based on the frequency of rare species in the community.
Record only the presence (1) or absence (0) of the species in each quad.
3. Jackknife Estimate Tally the number of unique species in each quad.
A unique species is a species that occurs in one and only one quadrat.
Unique species are spatially rare and not necessarily numerically rare, because they could be highly clumped.
4. Jackknife Estimate From Heltshe and Forrester (1983), the jackknife estimate of the number of species is: S-hat = Jackknife est. of species richness s = observed total of species present in n quadrats n = total number of quadrats sampled k = number of unique species
