Latitudinal Species diversity gradients Miller 8-1
Latitude • Distance North or south of the equator. • What changes as you move away from the equator?
More sunlight at equator. • Warmer • More seasonality as you move away from the equator.
Species diversity • Diversity refers to the number of different species in an area. • An area with lots of different kinds of species is said to have a high species diversity
Where is most of our species diversity located? • Tropical forests • Coral reefs • Deep sea • Tropical lakes
Latitudinal species diversity gradient • For most groups of plants and animals, species diversity decreases with distance from the equator. • Highest in tropics and lowest in polar tundra
What are some reasons for this pattern? • Resource availability is higher and more reliable in the tropics • Evolution is faster in the tropics – less disturbance • More diseases and parasites – keep any one species from dominating
