Introduction. • I have assumed you know how PP works…. • Aims:- • A quick revision on PP basics • To make PP a useful tool • To give you ideas to incorporate • To help you think about lesson plans and PP • To dispel some myths and (hopefully) give you some good ideas eLearning 2007
Some Myths • PowerPoint is difficult to use! • Teaching is like giving a presentation! • PowerPoint is good! • PowerPoint is bad! • You can never put too much information on a slide! • Animation (and other PP tools) are good! eLearning 2007
Revision – using PP (1) • Opening and Saving a file • Same as any other MStm application • Default is “bullet points” • Using Master View • Animating Text • Inserting pictures/videos etc. eLearning 2007

Revision – using PP (4) • Adding pictures and video • Two ways – • Select picture directly and [print screen], go to slide and [Copy] – resize as necessary. • Click [Insert] [Picture], [From File] or other selection. • This latter will also work for video. eLearning 2007

Information (1) • We are taught that in presentations too much script on a slide is bad. • Does this hold for teaching? • Clever use of display and animation can cover this eLearning 2007
Taught Example Some Ideas – (1) Using PP To Teach And Check Transfer Of Learning. • F10.1.2.1 • F = Masonry • 10 = Brick/block walling • .1 = Walls • .2 = Facework one side, thickness stated • .1= Vertical • Full description • F10.1.2.1 Walls, half brick in facings, PC sum £600 per 1,000, in stretcher bond in gauged mortar (1:4), pointing as work proceeds with a struck joint • Measured in square metres (sm or m2) eLearning 2007
Classwork What is the description for:- Using PP To Teach And Check Transfer Of Learning. • M20.2.1.2 ? • M = Surface Finishes • 20 = Plastered/Rendered/Roughcast coatings • .2 = Ceilings • .1 = exceeding 300mm wide • .2 = Plasterboard, skim and set coat plaster These answers are also provided via Moodle or by handouts (as some students do not use computers (still!)) eLearning 2007
Centre Line Girths. First look at construction – centre line girth will only work for items on the centre line! Animation and drawings • The last five slides all used:- • Standard MS “Drawing” toolbar • To produce drawings • Identical to MS Word or Excel • Custom animation • To select and animate text/drawings • Did you note anything about the backgrounds? • Any changes to the myths? eLearning 2007
Effects • Animation and drawings covered • Pictures can be from anywhere • “Dimming” makes it easier to follow in class (above lines not dimmed) • This line is dimmed – have I used this technique? eLearning 2007
Other ideas. • Pose questions within PP, leave on board, class work through answers, then show. • Stop PP in mid slide to switch to something on SmartBoard, then return to pick up the thread. • Use short (3-4) minute film clips (you can insert DVD, MP3 etc.) to pick up a point. eLearning 2007
Incorporating into lesson plans • Can be a useful tool for lesson planning • Can work out lesson delivery through the PP presentation. • PP presentation can be uploaded directly to Oaklearn/Moodle. • Can improve lesson delivery • Great for practising lesson and timings • “Notes” or “Handout” pages can give extra info (but be careful that tutor prompts are not on there!) eLearning 2007
