  1. Inventors Unit Exploring Inventors/Inventions of the Industrial Revolution & Using the Invention Process

  2. Standards for Unit • RLA.O.5.2.06 select and use a variety of resource materials to plan and deliver a short research project, citing references. • SS.5.H.CL5.2 identify prominent inventors and scientists of the period and summarize their inventions or discoveries (e.g., Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, the Wright Brothers, Henry Ford and Albert Einstein, etc.). • RLA.O.5.2.02 arrange thoughts and ideas in graphic representations to plan and write a product. • RLA.O.5.1.15 increase the amount of independent reading to comprehend, analyze and evaluate literary text and informational text. • RLA.S.5.3 Students will apply listening, speaking and media literacy skills and strategies to communicate with a variety of audiences and for different purposes. • SC.O.5.1.08 use a variety of technologies and scientific instruments to conduct explorations, investigations and experiments of the natural world. • M.O.5.3.5 draw a similar figure using a scale, given a real-world situation. • SC.O.5.1.04 compare and contrast the historical significance of scientific discoveries. • SS.5.H.CL5.2 identify prominent inventors and scientists of the period and summarize their inventions or discoveries (e.g., Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, the Wright Brothers, Henry Ford and Albert Einstein, etc.).

  3. Unit Objectives • Students will use resource materials to plan, create, and present a poster on their Industrial Revolution Invention/Inventor to the class. • Students will identify Inventors of the Industrial Revolution and summarize their inventions. • Students will collect ideas from informational text and use graphic organizers to plan and write a poster presentation • Students will investigate inventors of the Industrial Revolution and identify their contribution to society. • Students will identify problems and solutions given real world situations. • Students will have opportunities to solve real world problems through experimentation by creating an invention.

  4. Technology • Digital Video: A video will be played to engage and interest students that highlight inventions that resulted in the Industrial Revolution. • Website: I created a website that outlines the task and has links to each of the inventors. This way, students can access only the information that I have made available. • Digital Video: A video will be used to help engage students in the lesson and help further their understanding of the invention process. • Glogster: This will give students a reminder of their task. It also shows them pictures of the materials and reviews the specifications they must follow during the creation process.

  5. 21st Century Skills • Collaboration- Students will be working in groups and pair for many activities within the lesson. • Communication- Students will not only need to communicate with each other during group work, but also need to communicate what they learned during the poster presentations. • Creativity & Innovation- Students will use these skills in the creation of their structure in lesson two. • Problem Solving – Students will also use this during their creation of the structure. They will need to ask themselves: Is the initial plan working? What can be done to make it better? • Information Literacy- Students will be using a variety of materials including, books and the web to research a given inventor.

  6. Assessments • Pre/Post Assessment: • What was the Industrial Revolution in American history? • What did Inventor do to become famous? • What is the first step in the invention process? • Assessment Lesson 1: • Students will complete a poster presentation per rubric • Students will also individually complete a Invention Journal • Assessment Lesson 2: • Students will individually complete Invention Journal
