  1. PCC RDA CONSER Standard Record (CSR) in RDA instruction number order Part 2 of 3 Presented by UC Berkeley Spring 2014

  2. Learning Objectives • Apply the CSR (PCC Core) and UC Berkeley Policy Statements to describe textual serials and integrating resources (non-rare) in several formats: print, online, tangible electronic, microform • Distinguish substantive differences between AACR2 rules/AACR2 version of CCM & CSR and RDA instructions (plus local guidelines) for PCC Core elements • Exercise appropriate judgment when reviewing and editing existing copy for the local catalog @ UCB

  3. Training Overview • Day 1: CONSER/PCC Core elements in RDA Chapters 1-2 • Day 2 (today): CONSER/PCC Core elements in RDA Chapters 3-end • Day 3: making changes/working with copy @ UCB

  4. Acronym review CSR = LC-PCC PS = UCB PS = IR = P/N = CCM = CONSER Standard Record Library of Congress–Program for Coop. Cat. Policy Statement (RDA equiv. of LCRI) UC Berkeley Policy Statement (local policy) integrating resource provider-neutral CONSER Cataloging Manual @ UCB

  5. More acronym review AAP = WEMI = PFC = Authorized Access Point (RDA equiv. of “heading”) Work, Expression, Manifestation, Item (FRBR Group 1 entities) Person, Family, Corporate body (FRBR Group 2 entities) @ UCB

  6. Media Type & Carrier TypeRDA 3.2 & RDA 3.3 • MARC 33X: same meaning and application as for monographs • For print textual resources: 336 __ $a text $b txt $2 rdacontent 337 __ $a unmediated $b n $2 rdamedia 338 __ $a volume $b nc $2 rdacarrier • For non-print, use other Media Type and Carrier Type terms as applicable @ UCB

  7. Media Type & Carrier Type cont’dRDA 3.2 & RDA 3.3 • Example: online textual resources: 336 __ $a text $b txt $2 rdacontent 337 __ $a computer $b c $2 rdamedia 338 __ $a online resource $b cr $2 rdacarrier • $b codes are optional, the rest is required • Textual resources with any Media Type other than “unmediated” also need MARC 007 @ UCB

  8. ExtentRDA 3.4 • When is it required for serials & IRs? • All formats: whenever resource is complete and total extent is known • Serials: required for ceased titles even when total extent is notknown; give term only 300 __ $a volumes • IRs: P/N guidelines recommend using “1 online resource” even when not complete @ UCB

  9. Extent cont’dRDA 3.4 • When is it required for serials & IRs? cont’d • Tangible non-print formats: when currently published; give term only 300 __ $a computer discs • RDA 3.4.1.3 calls for using Carrier Type terms from RDA 3.3.1.3, but: • LC-PCC PS 3.4.1.3 Alternative allows using a term in common usage (e.g. “CD-ROM”) @ UCB

  10. DimensionsRDA 3.5 • When is it required? • Serials: for all non-print tangible resources • IRs: for all tangible resources per UCB PS 3.5 • Expand RDA 3.5.1.4 for instructions on each carrier type • Discs: follow UCB PS 3.5.1.4.4: record diameter of discs in inches • One of the few places in RDA where abbreviations are still used (see RDA Appendix B) @ UCB

  11. Note on Changes in Carrier CharacteristicsRDA 3.21.4 • PCC Core for any change that does not require a new description • E.g.: change from CD-ROM to DVD-ROM • Serials: make a note as in RDA 3.21.4.3.1 • IRs: change description to latest iteration; may make a note on previous characteristics @ UCB

  12. Uniform Resource LocatorRDA 4.6 • At UCB, used in: • Online version bibs • Print version serial bibs where we have online access • Never add an institution-specific URL to an OCLC master record • Examples: • Any URL that is different for different institutions • Any URL that is restricted to UC campus IP range @ UCB

  13. Content TypeRDA 6.9 • One of the 33Xs: 336 • Also OCLC Fixed Field “Type” (MARC Leader/06) • Only predominant Content Type is PCC Core @ UCB

  14. Language of ExpressionRDA 6.11 • No change from AACR2 • Record in OCLC Fixed Field “Lang” (MARC 008/35-37) • Also use MARC 041 if necessary – for multiple languages • Use codes from MARC Code List for Languages(also available in Cataloger’s Desktop) @ UCB

  37. Form of Notation: ScriptRDA 7.13.2 • PCC Core “if a language is commonly written in more than one script, and if the resource is in a script other than the primary one for the language.” • See examples at LC-PCC PS 7.13.2.3 & 7.13.2.4 • You (should) already know whether you need to use it @ UCB

  38. PFCs Associated with a WorkRDA Chapter 19 • What’s PCC Core? Only the PFC whose name is part of AAP for the work (i.e. MARC 100/110/111) • Apply RDA 6.27-6.31 to determine this • Don’t always have one, but if you do: • Usually: Creator (RDA 19.2) • Rarely: Other PFC Associated with a Work (RDA 19.3) (mostly legal works) @ UCB

  39. PFCs Associated with a Work cont’dRDA Chapter 19 • PCC recommended but not Core: • Any additional Creators (e.g. for collaborative works) • Any additional Other PFCs Associated with a Work (e.g. issuing body that is not also a creator) @ UCB

  40. ContributorRDA 20.2 • Not actually PCC Core for serials & IRs • Often not named for serials • Any that are named typically don’t have a relationship with the resource for all or most of its existence • Always record in MARC 7XX, never 1XX @ UCB

  48. Related WEMIRDA Chapters 24-28 • CONSER practice: do not use Appendix J relationship designators with linking entries (MARC 76X-78X) • Do not use $i at all if MARC tag + indicators unambiguously express the relationship • If explanation needed, use free text phrase in $i (may also add note (e.g. MARC 580) if necessary) • MARC 787 relationships no longer required; use only if necessary for user tasks @ UCB

  49. Compilation of ExpressionsLC-PCC PS 26.1 • What does this mean? Same full text in more than one language within each volume • E.g. Canadian government publications • What to do? Give analytical AAPs for original language expression and at least one translation • Not sure which language is “original”? Choose language of title proper @ UCB
