Columbus • First encounter happened after Columbus landed in the Caribbean in October 2, 1492 • He met the Taino, named their Island San Salvador and claimed it for Spain. • The Taino generosity was taken as their weakness and subjugate them. • Columbus claimed all the islands he saw for Spain and envisioned to have Christianity in all of them.
Columbus • Columbus made three more voyages with Spanish funding. • He believed he reached somewhere near India and called the lands indies and people “los indios” • He brought soldiers, priests and European colonists.
Impact on Native Americans • Europeans started Colonization and plantation • Native Americans did not give up without resistance. • They were Subjugated and enslaved. • Used as forced labor. • European diseases wiped out entire populations.
Impact on Africa • Slave Trade • Africans were enslaved and brought to Americas against their will • Inhuman treatment of Slaves • Many African Societies were devastated
Impact on Europe • Columbian Exchange benefited Europe by giving it new crops and food • Europeans gained more land and resources • National rivalries arose: • Treaty of Tordesillas solved Spanish and Portuguese Rivalry.
Birth of a New Society • Rise of a New Democratic society based on representative government.
