  2. My life is simple and happy... At home If you have a computer at home, you will probably also have a printer. One computer is probably enough for you - unless you have children... You may also have a modem, and a scanner, and maybe other bits and pieces...

  3. In a company or college Here, although you work in front of one computer, you are also connected to other computers.. They may situated anywhere - in the same room, in other buildings, other campuses, or even in other countries. The other computers provide various services to the computer which you are sitting in front of. They are referred to as “servers”. All the servers are interconnected by wires, similar to telephone wires. (One of the wires from your computer is the network connection.) The computers and wiring form the university network.

  4. In college, you will probably be using at least 4 servers, although you will not know this. Servers in College 1. A printer server This receives your document, puts it in a queue, and sends it to a printer 2. A File server. A place to save your documents, which is backed up every day. 3. An Internet Server. This provides the WWW service. 4. An Mail Server. This provides the Email service. It sends you mail out and receives your mail from outside.

  5. To connect to each server and to receive a service, you need to give 2 pieces of information: Passwords to Servers 1. a personal identification code - the “username”. This is public knowledge 2. a password This is a secret. This process is called a login. This means that you have to type your username and password. After you finish, you break the connection - you have to logout You can have the same username for each server However, your password can be different for each one.

  6. Login and file store servers These servers are not in the room where you are working, They are in the main computer area. Some of the services are listed below.   8. Computer Networks and the Internet There are connections from some computers in the university to other organisations in the world. These computers and their interconnections form the internet” All the computers are connected to each other via various routes. In fact it is just like a telephone system.

  9. What can the Internet be used for ? There are many possible uses: Sending and receiving personal messages. This is the email system Sending and receiving speech and video. This is referred to as videoconferencing. For example: Receiving information from other computers using Netscape. This is the ”World Wide Web” system. It uses the http procedure. Looking at Newsgroups There are various other ways to use it, such as ftp - picking up files from known locations, and telnet.
