What is an “I Am” poem? • Describes your protagonist • Is a poem, not just a list of facts • Utilizes poetic devices such as alliteration, similes, metaphors • Uses creative word choice; no flat or dead language (Good, cool, fun, bad…)
Requirements • Must have a creative title (different from any of the lines) • Be at least 10 lines long • First or last line is name of person • All lines start with I/My;I am, I ride, My heart, My soul… • Be creative, take a risk, try something new • At least 3 different uses of figurative language
Example I am a rock god I am an army brat then later enlisted myself I asked, Are You Experienced? My fingers dance like a devil over my guitar My guitar talks when I play I performed the “Star Spangled Banner” at Woodstock I light my guitar on fire My fire was extinguished on Sept. 18, 1970 in London I was known as Buster I am now Jimi Hendrix
Features of Obituaries • Date of death • Age at death • Quotes from friends/relatives • Place of birth • Education • Military service • Career(s) • Family life • Impact on community/society • Family left behind (called “survivors”) • Info about burial services • Should be about a page long, typed, double spaced and use appropriate writing skills
Visual Genre Requirements • Incorporate color • On unlined paper (final copy) • Use the entire paper • Includes information about the story (title, protagonist, antagonist, conflict, theme…) • Includes images that are important to the story
