HIPPOCRATES Hippocrates was a Greek physician who is considered to be the “Father of Modern Medicine.” He was born into a family of doctors, about 460 BC and he died about 375 BC. Hippocrates separated medicine from religion and superstition by searching for the natural causes for diseases. Since the Golden Era of Hippocrates, medical advances have since proved some of his discoveries to be false. Here are five medical practices that contradict Hippocrates beliefs. One: Hippocrates believed that epilepsy was caused by surplus phlegm. We know know that epilepsy is caused by electrochemical disturbances in the brain which can be genetic or the result of a serious accident. Two: Hippocrates believed that fevers were caused by too much blood in the body, therefore the cure was bloodletting. Today we know that bloodletting deprives the body of white and red blood cells needed to fight infection. Three: Hippocrates believed that the planets and astrology had to do with medicine. “He who does not understand astrology is not a doctor, but a fool.” We now know that astrology has nothing to do with medicine. We now know that astrology has absolutely nothing to do with medicine. Four: Hippocrates also believed that madness came from humidity of the brain. We now know that craziness, or madness, can be caused by a number of things like genetics, mercury poisoning, and rabies. Five: Hippocrates thought that by covering a person in mud he could see where a tumor was by finding the spot that dried the quickest. We now have X-rays MRIs and Ultrasound machines to find tumors. With all of the advances in modern medicine I feel that these three would be the most surprising to him. To begin with we now treat epilepsy with medicine, we are able to perform open heart surgery and heart transplants and finally we can find and treat cancer easier than by using mud. AFTERLIFE COMPARISON BUDDHISTS GREEKS A Buddhists main goal in life is to escape the cycle of being born and reborn through religion and Nirvana. Buddhism believes that what you do in one life will affect your next life, but it is a natural result and not a punishment from a God. In Buddhism there is no eternal soul, but memories and habits come through in your next life. Greek ideas about the afterlife were not precise, but they did think the soul survived the body and was reborn. Greeks had to pay Charon (ferry owner) in order to enter the afterlife. Dead souls did have the power to hurt the living and very good souls went to the Elysian Fields . Buddhists and Greeks believed in reincarnation. REINCARNATION Both Greeks and Hindus believe that your punishments were handed out by a God depending on your earthly actions. Hindus and Buddhists want to escape the cycle of birth and rebirth. HINDUISM In Hinduism there were many heavens and hells which they called worlds of light and worlds of darkness. Heaven was ruled by Indra and Hell was ruled by Yama. Souls passed from one body (life) to another in the hope of being released from the life cycle and be united with the Universal Soul. MODERN IMMORTAL My Modern Immortal’s name is Meg. She is the Goddess of Curiosity and Questions. Her parents are Zeus and Metis. Zeus is the King of Gods and Metis is the Goddess of Prudence. Like her Uncles Poseidon, God of the Undersea, and Hades, God of the Underworld, Meg has dark eyes and brown hair. When she was young her father, Zeus, gave Meg a gift worthy of only the gods themselves, he gave he the power to transform her shape at will. Though Zeus could do this it was almost unheard of him to share this power with anyone else. Meg’s favorite thing to transform into is a black cat with a thunderbolt on its chest. She preferred this form because she could easily listen in on others conversations. Because of her actions we say, “curiosity killed the cat.” Most of Meg’s shortcomings are because of her own curiosity and her constant questions. She wants to know how things work and why they do the things they do. Once after getting into trouble she was sent to her brother Hephaestus who taught her how to forge her own sword and shield. Later Meg was sent to her sister, Artemis – The Goddess of the Moon, who taught her how to use them. Along with her curiosity another shortcoming of Meg’s is her temper which gets her into a lot of trouble, that was why she is often sent to stay with relatives. Her only other fault is her love of sweets. Her current favorite dessert is chocolate bombs – chocolate cake with a pudding center. Meg’s actions are often influenced by her lack of sweets and the constant emailing, texting, instant messaging and calls she gets from her grandmother, Rhea, and her five great aunts Phoebe, Theia, Mnemosyne, Thethys, and Themis. Though she doesn’t have a throne on Olympus Meg is still important. Being so curious she normally has the answers to everything. Soon after she won a bet with Athena (Goddess of Wisdom) that she could answer any question that she was asked Meg earned her title as “The Goddess of Curiosity and Questions.” ART: Isabelle Antes SOURCE: Brandenberg, Aliki.
