What exactly is a revolution? • an overthrow or repudiation and the thorough replacement of an established government or political system by the people governed.
Revolution • a radical and pervasive change in society and the social structure, especially one made suddenly and often accompanied by violence
Revolution • a sudden, complete or marked change in something
What Revolutions do you know about? Have you heard of any revolutions?
New Ideas • Most, if not all, revolutions begin with the growth and spread of new ideas. • What new ideas are floating around today?
Social Conflict • When one or more groups in society are in conflict with another group (or groups) • EX: Rich vs Poor, Young vs Old • 1% vs 99%
Political Factors • Often revolutions begin when the ruling class fails to meet the needs of the people • Note: This does not need to actually be true – as long as the people believe they are not being treated fairly revolutionary ideas can grow.
Economic Conditions • When economic times are tough people are more willing to demand drastic change. • Generally – the tougher the times- the more dramatic the change called for. • “When you ain’t got nothin’ you got nothin’ to lose.” Bob Dylan
