How are the exams scored? • IB exams are scored on a scale of 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest) • 45 is the maximum number of points awarded. (6) grade 7’s + 3 bonus points for A’s on Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge papers. • The final subject grade is a combination of the internal assessment (IA) grade and the external assessment (exam). • Depending upon the subject, the IA grade is 20-50% of the final grade.
What are the requirements toearn the IB diploma? Candidates must: • Test in all six areas • Register for 3 HL (higher level) and 3 SL (standard level) exams, can register for 4 HL • Score a minimum of 24 points (at least 12 points in HL, 16 pts if testing 4 HLs) • Fulfill CAS, Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge (ToK) requirements. • An “E” grade for either ToK or EE increases the minimum point total to 28 points. • An “E” grade in both ToK and EE is an automatic failing condition, regardless of point total.
Other requirements… For scores 28 + • Minimum of 11 pts (HL) and 8 pts (SL). • No grade 1 in any subject. • No more than (3) grade 3’s. • No more than (1) grade 2 in any HL. • No more than (2) grade 2’s in an SL. For scores 24-27 • Minimum of 12 pts (HL) and 9 pts (SL). • No grade 1 in any subject. • No more than (3) grade 3’s. • No less than a grade 3 in any HL. • No more than (1) grade 2 in an SL.
Testing Junior or Senior Year??? • Diploma candidates may sit for all six exams in their senior year. • Anticipated candidates (juniors) may sit for up to two exams. *If you are taking the following subjects, you MUST test this year: Math Studies SL, Eco Systems SL, Chemistry SL, Level 5 in a World Language. • Course candidates (in 6th subject areas only) may sit for exams either year, but if sitting for an HL exam, it must be during his/her senior year.
Higher Level (HL) or Standard Level (SL) ? • Candidates should choose their strongest subjects for their HL exams. • Any subject combination is acceptable as long as there is one subject from each group and there are 3 HL’s and 3 SL’s. • Candidates should think about their strengths and talk with their teachers and IB counselors. • Candidates can take a class for two years and still test SL. Juniors cannot take an HL exam.
What are the six subject areas? • Group 1-English • Group 2-World Language • Group 3-Social Science • Group 4-Experimental Science • Group 5-Math • Group 6-Arts or a 2nd Group 2-5
Students who are strong in math and science… • Math HL • Science HL • Third HL [6th subject science (Biology or Physics) or next strongest subject] • World language SL • History SL • English SL
Students who are strong in humanities… • History HL • English HL • Third HL (6th subject humanities/art or next strongest area) • Math SL • Science SL • World Language SL
Let’s go back to those four numbers… • $41,000 is the average cost of attendance (tuition and fees) for one year at private college or university. • $21,000 is the average cost of attendance (tuition and fees) for one year at a public university. National Center for Educational Statistics May 2013 • $885 is the cost of six IB exams which could translate to 24 credits or a full year of tuition at a Colorado college or university. • 4 is what candidates need to score in each subject to earn their IB Diploma!
What are the next steps? • Fill out exam registration form. • Get teacher signatures ASAP. • Seniors need Mrs. Lubowicki or Ms. Murphy’s signature (EE draft completion). • Turn in form and payment to Mrs. Kumar no later than Tuesday, November 5th. We take Visa and MC. • Pay $10 IB stole fee (diploma candidates only). • Verify registration (with signature). • No refunds after Nov. 15th • Late registration or changes to registration after Nov. 15th will be charged extra fees!
