What are the pre-revolution beliefs of Islam? Why did certain religious groups feel that revolution against the Shah was necessary? How does this belief impact the citizens of Iran, the U.S., and/or the rest of the world? Pre-revolutionary Iran By: Kevin Dao
Pre-revolutionary Islam • Women were not allowed to wear veils • Forced to wear western style clothing • Women were given rights and education • Government and rich people owned land • Peasants were given nothing to live on
Revolution Against the Shah • Some women wanted veils to be brought back • Many Iranians could not stand the social inequality • Wanted a government that helped the poor • Wanted to bring back old ways of life/law
Impact of Revolution • Iran has receded in women’s rights and education • Heavily imposed UN sanctions on oil and trade • Enemies with U.S. due to harboring terrorists during 9/11 • Fear of nuclear weapons being developed
