  1. Practicing Organization of Writing EQ: How can I write with a plan?

  2. Thesis • On a clean sheet of paper, write out your thesis.

  3. Topic Sentences • Underneath your thesis write out your 2-3 topic sentences.

  4. Closer • Write your closer sentence that will be in your last paragraph. • Try not to repeat all you’ve just said! • Be interesting! Extend!

  5. Transitions in Body Paragraphs • First, second, third • Next • Significantly • Therefore, nevertheless, moreover

  6. Diction & Lit Terms • Raise your diction! Insert some “big words” & some lit terms!!!

  7. Syntax (sentence structure) • Underline the subject and verb in your 5 sentences. • Do you start every sentence: subject + verb + all the rest? • Look at the sentence structures. • Do you have too many short, choppy sentences? Can you combine some with subordinating conjunctions (after, when, if ) or relative pronouns (who, that, which)? • See pp. 362 ff.
