  2. What is Ethics? • Ethics is a major branch of philosophy, encompassing right conduct and good life. It is significantly broader than the common conception of analyzing right and wrong. A central aspect of ethics is "the good life", the life worth living or life that is simply satisfying, which is held by many philosophers to be more important than moral conduct. • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethics

  3. Ethical Framework • Do no harm! • Do what is right! • Respect Others! • Involves the interest of others! • Looks for the common good!

  4. Ethics Exercise One • The Board of Trustee’s (BOT) meeting was scheduled to hold a meeting on the Treasure Coast campus. Student Government members were invited to come and greet the BOT members and provide comments about their student experiences.  The students were thrilled at the invitation and offered to put together “goodie” bags for each BOT member.  • The SG members came to the meeting dressed very professionally, spoke well, and handed out the bags. The SG members looked professional and had made a good impression on the BOT members.  Later in the day some of the BOT members opened their bags.  Along with the “goodies” was a list of student issues/complaints about the campus.  • These complaints were new to the campus administration and there was no discussion about Student Government’s plans to add this list to the bags.

  6. Ethics Exercise Two • A member of SG met with the Vice President for Student Affairs to inform the Vice President that several students were upset about the prices in the campus retail store. The Vice President called a meeting of various campus administrators to investigate the matter and seek some resolution. Later the Vice President learned that the SG member had a bad experience with the prices and wanted something done. There were no other students involved.

  8. Ethics Exercise Two • During a student organization meeting, a member of SG (who was running for office) shared that if elected they would ensure that this student organization received an extra $2,000 over last year’s allocation.

  10. ETHICAL PRINCPLES • Play well in the sand box! • If you do not have some nice to say about someone do not say it. • Tell the truth while respecting others! • Practice integrity! • Lead with dignity! • Know your boundaries! • Empower Others! • Be good stewards of the resources!
