  2. lo riconoscerete? Se Cristo, domani, batterà alla vostra porta,

  3. Sarà, come una volta, un uomo povero, certamente un uomo solo.

  4. forse un disoccupato, Sarà, senza dubbio un operaio e anche, se lo sciopero è giusto, uno scioperante.

  5. si arresterà senza fine sui ballatoi Salirà scale su scale senza mai finire,

  6. con un sorriso meraviglioso sul suo volto triste. . .

  7. uno dei quindici milioni di profughi con un passaporto dell’ONU; Sarà forse un profugo, e che vagano, uno di coloro che nessuno vuole

  8. vagano in questo deserto che è diventato il Mondo “perché dopotutto non si sa da che parte arrivino”. uno di coloro che devono morire

  9. stanco di mendicare un buco negli alloggi di New York, O meglio ancora, in America, un nero, un negro, come dicono loro,

  10. come una volta a Betlemme, la Vergine Nostra Signora. . . Se Cristo, domani, batterà alla vostra porta, lo riconoscerete?

  11. annientato com’è perché deve portare tutte le pene della terra. . . Avrà l’aspetto abbattuto, spossato,

  12. E poi se gli si chiede: “Cosa sai fare?” non può rispondere: “Tutto”. Evvia, non si da’ lavoro ad un uomo così prostrato. . .

  13. non può rispondere: “Da ogni dove”. “Da dove vieni?”

  14. “Cosa pretendi di guadagnare?” non può rispondere: “Voi”.
