The expedition of Edward John Eyre Edward john Eyre (1815 – 9101) , together with his aboriginal friend Wylie, was the first man to cross southern Australia from east to west ,travelling across the Nullarbor plane from Adelaide to Albany. In 1840 he set out from Adelaide. Eyre led a group made up of 6 white men ,Wylie and 2 other aborigines. They took with them 13 horses ,40 sheep and supplies to last them 3 months . They travelled west across what is now known as Eyre Peninsula and along the coast. Harsh conditions and lack of water forced Eyre to send all but 4 of the group back to Adelaide. Eyre and the small group travelled on through 1300 km of harsh, barren country. The Nullarbor plain had no trees so there was no shade from the fierce heat of the sun. Water was becoming very scarce. When they were about halfway to the west Australian coast 2 of the aborigines murdered a white man and disappeared with most of the supplies. Eyre and Wylie continued on the expedition. In the July of 1840 Eyre and Wylie reached Albany. Their journey had lasted four and a half months.
