Explorers What you need to know (AKS 32a & 32b) 32a - describe reasons for, obstacles to, and accomplishments of the Spanish, French, and English explorations of… *John Cabot *Vasco Nunez Balboa *Juan Ponce de Leon *Christopher Columbus *Henry Hudson *Jacques Cartier 32b - generate reasons for exploration such as the search for gold, spread of Christianity, to find trade routes to Asia, and a quest for new lands

Additional AKS What you need to know (AKS 33 a, 33 b & 35a) • 33a - examine how the exchange of ideas and goods between Native Americans and Europeans affected each group • 33b - generalize that as more Europeans arrived, a breakdown in the relationship with the Native Americans began due to diseases/loss of life, and the loss of Native American land as a result of growing colonies • 35a - describe opportunity costs and their relationship to decision-making across time such as decisions to send expeditions to the New World

  4. Fast Fact-part 2 The exchange of ideas and goods between Native Americans and Europeans affected each group. (Natives and Explorers) As more Europeans arrived, a breakdown in the relationship with the Native Americans began due to diseases/loss of life, and the loss of Native American land as a result of growing colonies from Spain, England, and France.

Christopher Columbus 1451-1506 • Italian explorer who sailed for Spain. • He sailed across the Atlantic in 1492 with the help of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. • He was searching for a new route to Asia, but reached islands near the Americas instead. • He was hoping to trade for spices in Asia. • He made a total of four trips to the Americas..

Jacques Cartier 1491-1557 • French explorer who led three expeditions to eastern Canada. • He was looking for a route to the Pacific through North America (the Northwest Passage). • He did not find the Northwest Passage. • "Jacques Cartier discovered what is known as the St. Lawrence River."  • He paved the way for French exploration of North America.

  7. Juan Ponce de Leon 1460-1520 • Spanish explorer and soldier who was the first European to set foot in what is now Florida in 1513. • He also discovered the Gulf Stream (a current in the Atlantic Ocean). • He searched for the legendary fountain of youth and other riches.

  8. Vasco Nunez de Balboa 1475-1519 • Spanish conquistador who was the first European to see the eastern part of the Pacific Ocean in 1513. • He crossed the Isthmus of Panama to do so. • On another expedition he searched for treasures (pearls and gold).

  9. John cabot 1450?-1499? • Also known as Giovanni Cabot • He was an Italian explorer who explored Canada for the English. • He was searching for the Northwest Passage across North America to Asia. • He did not find the Northwest Passage..

  10. Henry Hudson 1570?-1611 • English explorer who claimed a large area of what is now New York City for the Dutch. • He found what is now called the Hudson River.
