  4. Obstacles in the way • Poor maps and navigational tools. • Disease and starvation. • Fear of unknown. • Not enough supplies.

  5. Accomplishments • Traded goods and ideas. • Better navigational maps and tools. • Claimed territories (new land)

  6. Where did France explore? • Quebec (Samuel de Champlain) • Mississippi River Valley (Robert La Salle)

  7. Where did Portugal explore? • Territories (land) along West Africa.

  8. Where did Spain explore? • Southwest of United States (Francisco Coronado)

  9. Where did England explore? • Eastern Canada (John Cabot)
