  2. THE GLORY OF IT ALL What is Glory? and What It Means to Us

  3. Three words are used for glory in Hebrew:(1) kavod ‘weight,’(2) hadar (unknown root), and (3) tip’arah ‘beauty.’

  4. The word used for glory is doxa ‘high opinion’ in Greek.

  5. Things you possess that impress others give you glory in their eyes(weight in society, beauty, a high opinion, reputation, and fame).

  6. THE GLORY OF THIS WORLD

  7. the glory of a garden or forest is lush vegetation:“He will destroy the glory (kavod) of his forest and of his fruitful garden” (Isaiah 10:18).“The wilderness and the desert will be glad,And the Arabah will rejoice and blossom;Like the crocusIt will blossom profuselyAnd rejoice with rejoicing and shout of joy.The glory (kavod) of Lebanon will be given to it,The majesty of Carmel and Sharon” (Isaiah 35:1-2).

(2) the glory of flowers are the beautiful petals and stamens:“All flesh is like grass,And all its glory (doxa) like the flower of grass.The grass withers,And the flower falls off” (1 Peter 1:24).“Consider the lilies, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; but I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory (doxa) did not clothe himself like one of these” (Luke 12:27).

  9. (3) the glory of a house is lavish furnishings:“Do not be afraid when a man becomes rich,When the glory (kavod) of his house is increased;For when he dies he will carry nothing away;His glory will not descend after him”(Psalm 49:16-17).

  10. (4) the glory of a man is beautiful clothing (endoxos, Luke 7:25),riches (kavod, of Haman, Esther 5:11),and all that money can buy(kavod, Psalm 49:16). Why? Because he looks impressive and does things that are impressive.

(5) the glory (hadar) of a king is having many people in his kingdom (Proverbs 14:28), exquisite clothing (of Solomon, Matthew 6:29), luxuries of the palace (of the royal glory of King Ahasuerus, Esther 1:4), making decisions based on the best available information and counsel (kavod, Proverbs 25:2), victory in battle (kavod, of the defeat of Edom by King Amaziah, 2 Kings 14:10), being buried in an elaborate tomb (kavod, Isaiah 14:18), and fame (of the “eternal fame” of Herod the Great, Josephus, Antiq. 15.376). Many things contribute to the glory of a king: “Solomon in all his glory (doxa)”(Matthew 6:29; Luke 12:27).

  12. (6) the glory of sons (children) is their fathers:“The glory (tip’arah) of sons is their fathers”(Proverbs 17:6b).Why? Because children look up to their fathers with admiration because they’re bigger, stronger, smarter, and more capable. They’re impressive. Children brag about their dads: “My father can lick your father!” Adopt their thoughts: “I’m for Adlai Stevenson because my dad is a democrat!” And walk in their shoes--literally!

  13. (7) the glory of young men is their physical strength:“The glory (tip’arah) of young men is their strength” (Proverbs 20:29).Why? Because their bodies are impressive. Strong. Muscular. Firm. Fit. Good looking. We usually look best in our twenties and thirties. Athletes usually retire in their 40s.

  14. (8) the crown of old men is grandchildren:“Grandchildren are the crown of old men” (Proverbs 17:6a).Why? Because they think he’s the greatest, give him their undivided attention, and surround him like a diadem.

  15. (9) the glory of old men is gray hair (wisdom):“A gray head is a crown of glory (tip’arah)”(Proverbs 16:31).“The honor (hadar) of old men is their gray hair” (Proverbs 20:29).Why? Because the wisdom of the aged is impressive and brings them glory. They’ve been around a long time, observed life, discovered through trial and error, observing others, and studying Scripture what works and doesn’t work, experienced life, and are able to make the best decisions.

  16. (10) the glory of God is man--the last and greatest of all created things:“For a man ought not to have his head covered, since he is the image and glory (doxa) of God”(1 Corinthians 11:7a).Why? Because man was created to glorify God: “Everyone who is called by My name,And whom I have created for My glory,Whom I have formed, even whom I have made” (Isaiah 43:7).“All nations whom Thou hast made shall come and worship before Thee, O Lord;And they shall glorify Thy name” (Psalm 86:9).

  17. (11) the glory of man is the woman--the best thing God ever created for men:“but the woman is the glory (doxa) of man”(1 Corinthians 11:7b).Why? Because, in popular thinking, blessed is the man who has a beautiful wife. Or a smart wife. Or a working wife. Or an adoring wife.Or in biblical thinking,(1) She is a companion and helper: “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him” (Genesis 2:18).

(2) She was created for men: “For indeed man was not created for the woman’s sake, but woman for the man’s sake”(1 Corinthians 11:9).(3) She can be very valuable to him: ”An excellent wife, who can find? For her worth is far above jewels. The heart of her husband trusts in her, And he will have no lack of gain. She does him good and not evil All the days of her life”(Proverbs 31:10-12).

(4) Inner beauty is even more valuable:“Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain,But a woman who fears the LORD,she shall be praised” (Proverbs 31:30).“And let not your adornment be merely external -- braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses; but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God” (1 Peter 3:3-4).

(5) Her willing submission impresses others and glorifies him:“For in this way in former times the holy women also, who hoped in God, used to adorn themselves, being submissive to their own husbands. Thus Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, and you have become her children if you do what is right without being frightened by any fear”(1 Peter 3:5-6).

  21. The submission of a wife to her husband in marriage is an important part of the angelic conflict (1 Corinthians 11:3-16).“Therefore the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels”(1 Corinthians 11:10).Ever wondered what this verse means?

  22. Angels are watching, and, in light of the angelic conflict, willingly submitting to your husband condemns Satan and glorifies God.Think about it. Inferior creatures are willing to make repeated decisions contrary to their own basic natures, suppress their own desires, and submit to the will of imperfect, selfish, fallen, and perhaps even cruel husbands in order to maintain a relationship with them and to please God.And they do all this just because God asks!

  23. This is the exact opposite of Satan’s decision eons ago:he refused to submit any longer to a perfect, unselfish Master who loved, provided for, and blessed him infinitely -- preferring instead his own agenda.

  24. Such submission, though, is one of the hard things in life:submitting to your husbands when you’d really rather have your own way.

  25. But, of course, she can be just the opposite --no glory at all:“An excellent wife is the crown of her husband, But she who shames him is as rottenness in his bones” (Proverbs 12:4).“And I discovered more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and nets, whose hands are chains. One who is pleasing to God will escape from her, but the sinner will be captured by her” (Ecclesiastes 7:26).

  26. (12) the glory of a woman is her long hair:“but if a woman has long hair, it is a glory (doxa) to her? For her hair is given to her for a covering”(1 Corinthians 11:15).Why? Because her long hair is beautiful. A beautiful hair style is impressive.

  27. Think the Farrah Fawcett -- a classic style from the 70s, fluffy with lots of flip and created with hot rollers.But she lost her glory through cancer treatments:“Her partner, actor Ryan O’Neal, 68, said she has lost all of her famous blonde hair” (May 8, 2009). “Ryan O’Neal spoke about Fawcett’s loss of hair: ‘Her famous hair is gone. I have it at home. She didn’t care. I rub her head. It’s kind of fun, actually, this great, tiny little head. How she carried all that hair I’ll never know.’”

  28. “How beautiful you are, my darling,How beautiful you are!Your eyes are like doves behind your veil;Your hair is like a flock of goatsThat have descended from Mount Gilead”(Song of Solomon 4:1).But inner beauty brings more glory:“And let not your adornment be merely external -- braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses”(1 Peter 3:3).“Her children rise up and bless her; Her husband also, and he praises her, saying: ‘Many daughters have done nobly, But you excel them all’” (Proverbs 31:28-29).

  29. (13) the glory of Israel is Jehovah (tip’arah, Lamentations 2:1; kavod, Micah 1:15).Why? Because Israel is God’s chosen people and he glorifies her among the nations.“You are My Servant, Israel,In Whom I will show My glory” (Isaiah 49:3).“And the LORD shall make you the head and not the tail, and you only shall be above, and you shall not be underneath, if you will listen to the commandments of the LORD your God” (Deuteronomy 28:13).

  30. GLORY OF THE NEXT WORLD

  31. (1) the glory of the millennial temple is the expensive building materials and adornments purchased with the wealth of all nations (kavod, Haggai 2:7) and the beautiful wood such as juniper, boxwood, and cypress (tip’arah, Isaiah 60:13).(2) the glory of the Church is holiness and perfection: ”that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory (endoxos), having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she should be holy and blameless” (Ephesians 5:27).(3) God will bring “many sons to glory” (Hebrews 2:10).(4) The glory of the next life is eternal (“eternal weight of glory”2 Corinthians 4:17; “eternal glory” 2 Timothy 2:10).(5) We will reflect the glory of God forever(Daniel 12:3; Matthew 13:43).

  32. LESSONS FOR LIVING

  33. Glory in this life depends on God: “On God my salvation and my glory rest; The rock of my strength, my refuge is in God” (Psalm 62:7).(2) Glory in this life is temporary: it fades away (Psalm 37:20; 1 Peter 1:24; James 1:10) and is lost (Psalm 7:5; 49:17; Isaiah 14:18).Beauty fades. Strength wanes. Money is lost. You can’t take it with you.

(3) We should glory in our high position as royal priests:“let the brother of humble circumstances glory in his high position” (James 1:9).To glory in our high position is to have a high opinion of ourselves based on faith in the promises of positional truth. We will be superheros someday! So it’s OK to have a high opinion of yourself as long as it’s realistic and doesn’t lead to pride.

  35. (4) We were created to glorify God(of Israel, Isaiah 43:7; of the nations, Psalm 86:9).(5) Do everything to the glory of God; or worded differently, in everything glorify God (1 Corinthians 10:31).

  36. (6) True glorification comes not from men but from God (John 8:54; 1 Thessalonians 2:6;Hebrews 5:5).(7) The glories of the next life are beyond comprehension:“For momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory (doxa) far beyond all comparison, while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal”(2 Corinthians 4:17-18).

  37. “Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen”(1 Timothy 1:17).
