DESCRIPTION OF CAREER • Police officers and detectives enforce laws • Catch criminals • Collect evidence • Testify in court • Prevent crime • Give out traffic tickets, direct traffic • Most police officers and detectives work at least 40 hours a week • They have to be ready to go to work at all times • Police officers may work very long hours on a case

  8. Education Required • Police Academy • Physical Tests • Some college is required for most • A college degree is required for Federal law enforcement

Job Outlook • The outlook is good • Expected to grow about as fast as all other occupations • College training in police science or military experience increase chances for job • Average income is $53,000 • Benefits include paid vacation, sick leave, medical and life insurance • Many retire at half-pay after 25 or 30 years of service.
