  1. 9.1 Cellular Respiration: An Overview p250

  2. Chemical Energy & Food • Organisms get the energy they need from food. • calorie-energy needed to raise 1 g of water, 1 degree.

  3. Overview

  4. In/Out Light DEPENDENT • In • Light • Water • NAD+ • ADP • Out • O2 • ATP • NADPH

  5. In/Out Light INDEPENDENT • In • ATP • NADPH • **CO2 • Out • NADP+ • ADP • Sugar

  6. Overview of Cellular Respiration • CR -release energy from food in the presence of oxygen. 6O2 + C6H12O6 6CO2 + 6H20 + Energy Oxygen +sugar carbon dioxide+water+energy

  7. Cellular Respiration has 3 stages: Glycolysis-in cytoplasm (2ATP) Krebs Cycle-in mitochondria (2ATP) Electron Transport Chain-in mitochondria (32 ATP)

  8. In cytoplasm In mitochondria

  9. Oxygen & Energy • Aerobic-CR that requires oxygen (Krebs & ETC) • Anaerobic-CR that do NOT require oxygen (glycolysis)

  10. Q: What is the relationship between photosynthesis & cellular respiration? A: Photosynthesis removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and CR puts it back. Photosynthesis releases oxygen into the atmosphere, and CR uses that oxygen to release energy from food.

  11. Removes CO2 Releases O2 In Chloroplast In plants only Returns CO2 Uses O2 In Mitochondria In Plants and Animals Photosynthesis Cellular Resp. Opposite Formulas

  12. WS p130-132 • #1-16 only • Turn worksheet in when finished.
