  9. Get started

  10. iteration

  11. Kirstie’s writing process • Words on paper • Any words • know that they are not the best words • Blah blah blah is acceptable • ***insert something about X here**** • Iterative edits • Easier than writing • Learn to let go • Imagine that somebody else wrote this • Read CAREFULLY

  12. The submission system • Check it out before hand… • What do you need to upload? • What information do you need? • Do your co-authors also need to be registered in the system? • Upload an “almost done!” version at least 30 minutes before • Better than missing the deadline due to circumstances beyond your control!

  13. The reviews

  14. It is always reviewer #3 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VRBWLpYCPY

  15. Notification • Of Acceptance • Yay! • Now the work of making the camera-ready copy begins: improve your paper • Presentation? Poster?

  16. Notification • Of rejection • Quick skim and then walk away from your computer • After you have processed it, go back to the review • Anonymous Facebook friend of a friend: “I generally read them, then go make coffee/take a walk/etc and reread. Often the first read sounds like " you suck" while the second read sounds like "I have some questions and concerns.” • Improve your paper • Find a new venue!

  17. The Presentation

  18. Saul Greenberg’s tips • Attend and critique presentations • Good or bad, you learn • Practice Practice Practice • It is not all about the slides, practice for timing • (and then remember to delete timings in PPT!) • Have others critique you • Practice talks: supervisor, lab meeting • (give them a hard copy of your presentation to make notes on)

  19. Examples of good / bad presentations • Bad…… • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATfY8dvbuFg • Good…… • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5utoLhjUuAI
