NSFC: Policy, Mission, and Values • Corporate Policy: A central funding organization for basic research under the jurisdiction of the State Council of China • More than 90% of budget from central government; • Budget in 2015: 22.2 billion RMB ( ~30 billion Euros); • Proposals received in 2015: ~ 170, 000 • Mission: To support the development of Chinese science and basic research at a high international level, to foster talents for science and research, and to contribute to the advancement of cultural and knowledge-base society in China.

NSFC: Policy, Mission, and Values • Values: • Excellence and competition: to adopts the peer review system to select the best proposal for support for high quality research • Independence: to ensure and safeguard the freedom in science and research (around 70% of the budget goes to curiosity-driven bottom-up research) • Equal treatment of all disciplines: to treats all researchers according to the same standards • Transparency and fairness: to makes every effort to avoid conflicts of interest, to communicate its methods and decision-making process clearly • Equal opportunities: to evaluates grant applications without regard to the applicant's position or academic degree

Fellowships NSFC-RS Newton Advanced Fellowships (UK, annual call in all areas, 3-year program) NSFC-ERCParticipation of Chinese researchers in ERC-funded projects (ERC, annual call, 6-12 months stay in Europe) Research Fund for International Young Scientists - Foreign young researchers (<35) to work in China for 6-12 months

Major International Cooperation Program with European Countries Big investment on both sides to tackle major scientific issues; Top-down Designed Consortium and Integrated Program; NSFC-RCUK (100 million RMB from NSFC; 8.6 million Pounds from RCUK) (Critical Zone Research; Air Pollution and Human Health)

NSFC’s Cooperation with EU • Administrative Arrangement b/w NSFC and DG-Research to implement Coordinated Calls signed on Mar. 26, 2010; • First joint call in Biomateriallaunched in July, 2012 • 28 proposals received • Peer review (2 Chinese: 2 European) • Dec.10-14 Panel review • 3 finally funded: 9 million RMB from NSFC A successful initiative Continue the discussion and Perfect the scheme; Look forward to broader and more substantial cooperation.
