Planning for Each Class • Make sure to the read the syllabus for each class! • Understand the grading scale • Know the location of the class BEFORE the first day of the class • Know the laptop and cell phone policies for each class • E-mail the professor with any questions you may have
Finding Your Classes
Planning for Each Class (Cont’d) • Download any necessary computer materials Ex: My-Itlab, Math Labs, lecture notes, etc. • Look at roster of class (most classes will have this on the Sakai Website) and see if there is anyone you know in the class. This could be a potential study buddy!
Note-taking • Find your best method of taking notes. • Ex: Color Coding, Underlining, Highlighted, etc. • Write Neatly! • Possibly take notes on your computer • SHORT HAND – you will NOT have time to get down every word that comes out of the professors mouth.
Study Skills • Do not wait until last minute to begin studying • Study with a friend if that helps you • Go to professor and TA office hours with questions • Do practice questions (if available) • Go to tutoring/teaching centers • Review Classes (If available) • Find your best study environement
Organization • Have a calendar or planner! • Mark down important dates • To-Do lists/priority lists if they help you • Keep binders clean and organized. Have folders so you do not misplace worksheets and handouts.
Section 2Where to Go! ACADEMIC • Libraries • Utilizing Office Hours • Teaching Centers NON-ACADEMIC • Health Center • Counseling and Wellness Center
Main Libraries • Library West (Open 24 hours Mon-Thurs) • Marston Science Library • Smathers Library
Office Hours • Office Hours are basically free tutoring sessions • This gives you an opportunity to meet with either your professor or your TA to ask them any questions you would like • Additionally, developing a relationship with your professor can be important for the future
