How to be Successful In a diverse group In a multicultural group
Definition of Diversity The concept of diversity encompasses acceptance and respect. It means understanding that each individual is unique, and recognizing our individual differences. These can be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies. It is the exploration of these differences in a safe, positive, and nurturing environment. It is about understanding each other and moving beyond simple tolerance to embracing and celebrating the rich dimensions of diversity contained within each individual http://gladstone.uoregon.edu/~asuomca/diversityinit/definition.html

Multiculturalism was originally associated with initiatives for race and gender equality in the workplace. Primary dimensions of diversity, however, certainly include race and gender, but also age, ethnicity, physical ability, and increasingly, sexual orientation. Additionally, secondary factors such as education, geographic location, income, marital status, military experience, parental status, religious preference, and work experience also reflect the elements of a diverse or multicultural workforce. Both primary and secondary characteristics significantly affect an individual's interaction in the workplace

Get into a group of 4 One of you will be: (you must have at least 1 boy, 1 girl in your team) • The manager • Age 45 • Age 25 • Customer ** decide who is going to play what role
Now…. • The manager and two employees work for a design company. You are designing a new cell phone. The customer is from a retailer that will sell your phone. • You as a group of 4 must design a phone that meets the needs for: • A market in the US and a foreign country • Must be user friendly • Must be future needs of society
Plan: Part a: • Sketch out what you want your phone to look like, label all the features Part b: - Design how to promote the phone in the foreign country. Be sure to include any culture issues you might encounter
Turn in: • Sketch • Foreign country information • Details on how the 2 employees viewed the situation differently • Reflect: • How did your group perform together? • What issues did you encounter? • Does working together in a diverse group affect your outcomes? How and Why?
